ChatGPT training: what it does, what it costs, and how to get real value from it
ChatGPT fields over 2.5 billion queries every day — and most of those queries are glorified Google searches. People type a question, scan the answer, and close the tab. They never touch Projects, ignore Deep Research, and have no idea that Agent Mode can book a restaurant while they finish a slide deck.
This ChatGPT training guide fixes that. You will learn what ChatGPT can do in the GPT-5.2 era, which pricing tier matches your workload, and where the real limitations hide — including what happens to your data on every plan. AITutoro's adaptive training helps you move past the basics faster, but first, you need the full picture.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) built by OpenAI. It launched in November 2022, hit 100 million users within two months, and at the time set the record for fastest-growing consumer application. As of October 2025, roughly 800 million people use it every week, making chatgpt.com one of the most-visited websites on the planet.
The current default model is GPT-5.2, released in December 2025 with a knowledge cutoff of August 31, 2025. It sits at the top of a family that includes GPT-5, GPT-5.1, GPT-5-mini, and GPT-5-nano — each tuned for different trade-offs between speed, cost, and reasoning depth. OpenAI retired the older GPT-4o from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. For the latest updates, check the ChatGPT release notes.
ChatGPT is multimodal. It reads and generates text, creates and edits images, holds voice conversations, executes Python code, analyzes spreadsheets, browses the web, and — with Sora 2 — generates video. All of that happens in a single chat window.
What it is not: a search engine replacement, a factual database, or a system that "understands" in the human sense. It predicts the next useful token based on patterns. That makes it powerful and occasionally wrong — a combination you need to manage, not ignore.
ChatGPT pricing plans (February 2026)
OpenAI runs two pricing tracks: consumer plans for individuals and business plans for teams and enterprises. Pricing changes often, so treat these numbers as a snapshot. Last verified: February 13, 2026. See the OpenAI pricing page for the most current figures.
Consumer plans
| Plan | Price | Model access | Deep Research | Voice | Ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/mo | GPT-5.2 (limited messages) | 5 queries/mo | Limited hours/day | Yes (US) |
| Go | $8/mo | GPT-5.2 (10x Free limits) | 5 queries/mo | Limited hours/day | Yes (US) |
| Plus | $20/mo | GPT-5.2 + Thinking mode + Codex | 25 queries/mo | Near-unlimited | No |
| Pro | $200/mo | Unlimited GPT-5.2 + GPT-5.2 Pro | 250 queries/mo | Unlimited | No |
Go, Plus, and Pro bill monthly only — no annual discount. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu remain ad-free. Free and Go tiers display ads in the US as of February 2026. OpenAI introduced the Go tier in August 2025 to bridge the gap between Free and Plus.
Business plans
| Plan | Price | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| Business | $25/seat/mo (annual) or $30/seat/mo (monthly), 2+ users | Admin console, workspace management, company knowledge connectors, data excluded from training. |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | Unlimited GPT-5.2, SSO/SAML, EKM, SOC 2 Type 2, ISO certifications, analytics, priority support. |
| Edu | Custom pricing | Enterprise-level features tailored for educational institutions. |
OpenAI renamed Business from "Team" in August 2025. Enterprise and Edu require a sales conversation — no public pricing.
Which plan fits you?
Casual user: Free works if you need fewer than ten messages every few hours and can tolerate ads. Upgrade to Go ($8) for more headroom and reasoning models.
Power user: Plus ($20) unlocks Codex, near-unlimited voice, Sora video, and 25 Deep Research queries per month. Most professionals land on this plan.
Team lead evaluating adoption: Business ($25/seat) adds admin controls, data training exclusion, and company knowledge connectors — the minimum for responsible organizational use.
Enterprise buyer: If you need SOC 2, ISO certifications, encryption key management, data residency, and SCIM provisioning, Enterprise is the only option. See how ChatGPT compares to Claude or read the ChatGPT vs Copilot comparison to benchmark against alternatives.
Core features: a ChatGPT tutorial for every tier
ChatGPT packs more tools into a single interface than most users realize. Here are the ones that deliver immediate, measurable value.
Web search (ChatGPT Search). Available on every tier, including Free, since February 2025 — no signup required. ChatGPT decides when to search the web based on your query, or you can trigger it manually. Results include visual cards for weather, stock prices, sports scores, maps, and news. Partnerships with news and data providers keep results current. Think of it as a research assistant that reads twenty tabs and gives you the summary — not a replacement for verifying primary sources. You can also set ChatGPT Search as your Chrome default search engine via the Chrome extension, putting it directly in your browser URL bar.
Image generation (GPT Image 1.5). The current default image generator replaced DALL-E as the primary engine. It supports iterative editing — ask for changes to an existing image and ChatGPT modifies it in place rather than starting over. DALL-E 3 remains accessible through a dedicated GPT but reaches end of support in May 2026. Available to Free, Plus, Pro, and Business users.
Advanced Voice Mode. A voice conversation with ChatGPT responds in as little as 232 milliseconds on average. Nine output voices ship with the product, plus a dedicated GPT voice called Shimmer. Paid users get adaptive speaking style — ChatGPT adjusts speed, length, and tone based on your instructions. Works with Custom GPTs. Current limitation: voice mode does not yet support image generation, file uploads, or Code Interpreter within the same session.
Canvas. An editing surface that sits beside the chat window for collaborative work on documents and code. Open a file in Canvas and ChatGPT suggests inline edits, rewrites paragraphs, reviews code, adds logs, fixes bugs, or ports code between JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, and PHP. You can mark up text, get inline suggestions, and share rendered Canvas assets — including React and HTML code — with other users from the toolbar. Canvas also works with Custom GPTs when the GPT creator enables it. Available to all users on Web, Windows, and macOS, with mobile support coming soon.
Data analysis (Code Interpreter). Upload a CSV, Excel file, PDF, Word document, PowerPoint, or image, and ChatGPT runs Python code to analyze it. It generates interactive tables and charts, handles files up to 512 MB each, and processes up to 80 file uploads every three hours (10 GB per user, 100 GB per organization). Reasoning models like GPT-5.2 with Thinking mode can combine Python analysis with web search and visual reasoning in a single agentic workflow. If your quarterly report lives in a spreadsheet, this is where ChatGPT earns its subscription fee.
Memory. ChatGPT's memory operates on two layers: explicit saved memories (facts and preferences you tell it to remember) and implicit chat history reference (it pulls context from past conversations). As of April 2025, ChatGPT references all past conversations to personalize responses. Pro users get maximum memory capacity; each tier below gets progressively less.
ChatGPT Projects. Group related chats, uploaded files, and custom instructions into a workspace. ChatGPT maintains context across every conversation within a Project — ideal for ongoing work like a marketing campaign, a research thesis, or a product launch.
Advanced features for power users
The features below separate casual ChatGPT usage from professional-grade workflows.
Deep Research. Give ChatGPT a research question and it crawls hundreds of web sources, synthesizes findings, and produces a structured report. You can upload files as context, restrict searches to trusted sites, and connect apps through MCP. Users can create and edit a research plan before execution and track progress mid-run, adjusting direction as results come in. As of February 10, 2026, Deep Research works with any MCP connector and offers a redesigned sidebar entry point and fullscreen report view. Since July 2025, it can also access a visual browser via Agent Mode. Quotas: Free gets 5 queries/month, Plus and Business get 25, Pro gets 250. When you exhaust your full-version limits, queries fall back to a lightweight version powered by o4-mini.
Agent Mode. A unified system that combines Operator (browser automation), Deep Research (synthesis), and ChatGPT's core intelligence. Agent Mode can navigate websites, fill forms, work with files, edit spreadsheets, create slideshows, and connect to third-party data sources. It supports scheduled and recurring tasks — daily, weekly, or monthly — so you can set a Monday morning competitive briefing or a Friday end-of-week report and let it run without intervention. Available on paid plans across Web, iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows.
Custom GPTs and GPT Store. Build a task-specific assistant without writing code. Define its instructions, upload reference documents, and optionally connect it to external APIs. Custom GPTs transitioned to GPT-5.2 as their default model on January 12, 2026. Voice Mode works with Custom GPTs. Plus, Business, and Enterprise users can access the GPT Store.
Codex (agentic coding). A command center for multi-agent software development. The latest model, GPT-5.3-Codex, runs roughly 25% faster than its predecessor and sets new benchmarks on SWE-Bench Pro and Terminal-Bench. Codex operates in cloud environments with built-in worktrees, so multiple agents work in parallel across your projects. An open-source Codex CLI handles local environments.
Thinking level toggle. Choose between Standard (fast), Light (faster), and Extended (deep reasoning) modes. Introduced in September 2025, this toggle lets you decide whether you need a quick answer or a carefully reasoned analysis. OpenAI tuned thinking speeds multiple times in January and February 2026, so expect continued refinement.
Sora 2 (video generation). Generate videos in widescreen, vertical, or square formats. Sora 2 produces more physically accurate and controllable video than its predecessor, with synchronized dialogue and sound effects built in. Plus users get videos up to 720p and 10 seconds; Pro users get up to 1080p and 20 seconds, plus access to Sora 2 Pro, a higher-quality experimental variant. Additional usage beyond plan limits can be purchased through credits.
Apps and connectors (MCP). ChatGPT connects natively to Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, Notion, Asana, Linear, GitHub, HubSpot, Intercom, and more. Enterprise customers can sync company knowledge from these sources directly into ChatGPT. New MCP partner apps — including Amplitude, Vercel, Monday.com, Stripe, and Semrush — launched in February 2026.
ChatGPT Atlas (browser). An AI-native web browser available on macOS. Atlas can research, analyze, automate tasks, plan events, and book appointments while you browse. Privacy caveat: Atlas falls outside the scope of SOC 2 and ISO attestations. OpenAI explicitly warns against using it with regulated, confidential, or production data.
ChatGPT use cases by role — who benefits most?
Different roles extract different value from ChatGPT. Here is where each profession should focus — and which plan supports it.
Marketers. Draft campaign briefs, generate social media images with GPT Image 1.5, and analyze campaign performance data in Code Interpreter. Deep Research can compile competitive intelligence reports in minutes. Explore ChatGPT for marketing teams for role-specific training paths. Recommended plan: Plus for image generation and Deep Research access.
Example prompt:
"Analyze this CSV of Q4 campaign metrics. Identify the three channels with the highest cost-per-acquisition increase and suggest budget reallocation."
Developers. Use Canvas for code review and debugging. Codex handles multi-file refactoring and test generation across parallel agents. The Thinking toggle on Extended mode catches logic errors that standard generation misses. See AI tools for developers for structured learning. Recommended plan: Plus for Codex access, Pro for heavy usage.
Example prompt:
"Review this Python function for edge cases. Flag any inputs that would cause silent failures rather than exceptions."
Researchers and analysts. Deep Research synthesizes literature reviews and data interpretations from hundreds of sources into structured reports. Upload PDFs and datasets for Code Interpreter to cross-reference findings. Recommended plan: Pro if you run more than 25 research queries per month.
Example prompt:
"Conduct a Deep Research report on the adoption rate of generative AI in European financial services, focusing on regulatory barriers and compliance frameworks published after January 2025."
Educators. Generate differentiated lesson content, create assessment rubrics, and draft student feedback at scale. Canvas makes collaborative editing with students straightforward. Recommended plan: Plus for full Canvas and voice capabilities, or Edu for institutional deployment.
Example prompt:
"Create three versions of this biology lesson — one for remedial students, one for grade level, and one for advanced learners. Adjust vocabulary and complexity accordingly."
Sales and customer service. Draft personalized outreach emails, prepare objection-handling scripts, and connect ChatGPT to HubSpot or Intercom for CRM context. Agent Mode can automate follow-up sequences. Recommended plan: Business for CRM connectors and admin controls.
Example prompt:
"Write a follow-up email to a prospect who attended our product demo but hasn't responded in 10 days. Tone: professional and helpful, not pushy. Reference the three features they asked about."
Executives. Use Deep Research for strategic briefings and competitive intelligence. Agent Mode prepares meeting summaries and action items. Projects keep board prep materials organized across conversations. Recommended plan: Pro for maximum Deep Research quota and reasoning depth.
Example prompt:
"Summarize the competitive landscape for AI-powered customer service platforms. Focus on pricing changes, new entrants, and feature launches from the past 90 days."

What ChatGPT gets wrong — limitations you should know
ChatGPT is powerful. It is also wrong more often than its confident tone suggests. Knowing where it fails saves you from costly mistakes.
Hallucinations. ChatGPT generates plausible-sounding falsehoods. It will cite studies that do not exist, invent statistics, and present fabricated quotes with unwavering confidence. Always verify critical claims against primary sources — especially in legal, medical, and financial contexts.
Context window limits. The Free tier operates within roughly 8,000 tokens of context. Even Pro users working with GPT-5.2 Chat have a 128,000-token window with 16,384 max output tokens. In long conversations, ChatGPT drops early messages silently. If your tenth message contradicts your second, ChatGPT may not notice.
Knowledge cutoff. GPT-5.2 trained on data through August 31, 2025. Web search compensates for more recent events, but search results lack completeness and ChatGPT may blend outdated training data with fresh results without flagging the mix.
No genuine understanding. ChatGPT matches patterns — it does not reason from first principles. Edge cases, novel logic puzzles, and domain-specific nuances break it. Extended Thinking mode helps with complex reasoning tasks, but even GPT-5.2 Pro's impressive benchmark scores do not translate to reliable performance on every real-world problem. Treat its output as a skilled first draft, not a final answer.
Rate limits and message caps. Free tier users get approximately ten GPT-5.2 messages every five hours. Even paid plans impose caps under heavy server load. Pro offers "unlimited" GPT-5.2 access, but that promise comes with fair-use caveats during peak demand.
Ads on Free and Go tiers. As of February 2026, Free and Go users in the US see ads — small sponsored boxes below AI responses. OpenAI confirmed ads on both tiers when testing began on February 9, 2026. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu remain ad-free.
Data privacy — what happens to your conversations
Privacy is the make-or-break factor for professional ChatGPT adoption. The rules differ sharply by plan. For full details, see OpenAI Enterprise privacy.
Consumer plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro)
OpenAI uses your conversations for model training by default. You can opt out via Settings > Data Controls > "Improve the model for everyone." Once toggled off, new conversations will not train future models. Alternatively, use Temporary Chat — a mode that skips history, disables memory, and excludes data from training.
The feedback caveat: If you give a thumbs up or thumbs down on any response, OpenAI may use the entire conversation tied to that feedback for training — even if you opted out of general training. This is easy to miss and significant for anyone handling sensitive information.
Business plans (Business, Enterprise, Edu)
OpenAI excludes data from training by default. No opt-out required. Enterprise adds AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, Enterprise Key Management (EKM) for customer-controlled encryption keys, and compliance certifications: SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, and ISO 27701. A Data Processing Addendum supports GDPR and CCPA compliance. Data residency spans Europe, UK, US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Australia, and the UAE.
The Atlas warning
ChatGPT Atlas falls outside the scope of SOC 2 and ISO attestations. OpenAI warns: do not use Atlas with regulated, confidential, or production data. For Enterprise customers, Atlas ships off by default — admins must enable it through workspace settings. The security posture will likely evolve as the product matures, but today, this is a hard boundary for compliance-sensitive organizations.
API
OpenAI has not used API data for training since March 2023, unless you explicitly opt in. See OpenAI's API data usage policy for details.
Practical guidance
| Data sensitivity | Recommended minimum plan |
|---|---|
| Public, non-sensitive | Free or Go |
| Internal business documents | Business (data excluded from training) |
| Regulated or confidential data | Enterprise (SOC 2, ISO, EKM, data residency) |
| Anything involving Atlas | Avoid until SOC 2/ISO certification lands |
